A New Leaf For a New Year

December 28, 2010

This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Jimmy Dean however the opinions and feelings expressed here are my own.

I’m not usually big on New Year’s Resolutions, simply because I hate feeling like a sheep going along with the crowd. I hate making a bunch of unreasonably difficult promises to myself that I know I’ll never be able to keep.

However, there’s something about the new year to inspire a fresh start. Maybe it’s the clean and uncluttered way everything looks once the Christmas decorations are back in the attic. Maybe it’s the uncluttered way life feels once the holiday hubbub has died down. Maybe it’s just the promise of a whole year stretched out ahead, full of the unknown. Whatever it is, I’m setting a couple of modest goals. I want to eat better and get back into the gym on a regular basis. If that helps me fit back into some of my old jeans then all the better. Mostly I just want to get a little healthier, have more energy and improve my mood.

One of my biggest challenges when it comes to eating better is reducing my intake of simple carbs. I know that when I focus more on lean proteins, fresh produce and whole grains and less on simple carbs and sugar I feel better, I lose the cravings and I generally lose weight.

The problem is that I love pasta. And rice. And bread. And dessert. Past experience has taught me that the fastest way to crave something is to put in my forbidden-food list. No particular food will ever be banned but I can make better choices at least some of the time.

Aside from my love of pasta and all things carb-filled, my habit of skipping breakfast gets in the way of eating well. I know all the reasons I’m supposed to eat in the morning but I just don’t do it. The breakfast foods I like aren’t usually the healthy choices. The healthy options that are also convenient get boring after a while. How many days in a row can I eat a hard boiled egg wrapped in single slice of dry rye toast before going crazy and giving up?

Frozen and/or convenience foods aren’t usually my thing but occasionally they really hit the spot, like this new product, D-Lights from Jimmy Dean.  It’s easy, it’s packed with lean protein and it’ll help me start my day (and my year) off on the right foot. And they’re not too bad!

BlogHer and Jimmy Dean are kicking off the year with a “Better Breakfast, Better You”

And, because everyone loves a chance to start the year off with a win, there’s a great giveaway. What changes are you making for the new year? Leave a comment and get a chance at a $100 Visa Gift Card!  Hurry, because the giveaway runs from December 28, 2010 through January 30, 2011.

My plan for 2011 is to “do what matters most”. That means I will put my time and energy toward the things I care most about, which includes keeping in touch with the people I love, making our home a more orderly place (which will make my sweetheart very happy), and finding time to be creative. And, on a practical note, I won’t be putting sugar in my tea or on my breakfast cereal any longer.

MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES 4 ME. ALSO WALKING TO THE STORE MORE OFTEN.

98 Milissa January 4, 2011 at 11:36 am

I have resolved to actually eat breakfast in the morning. Usually I just run out of the house and don’t even think about it. So by mid-morning, I am starving and I have to go the vending machine to get something to snack on. So by eating a healthy breakfast every day, I should be able to curb all of the snacking that I do.

153 shel January 13, 2011 at 8:39 pm

My New Year’s Resolution is that every year, from now on, I’m going to either learn something new or try something I’ve never done before. I always felt weird that I didn’t know how to swim so this year I signed up for swimming lessons at our local community college. Not only will I learn a new skill, I’m hoping to get healthier with some much-needed exercise.

155 Kathleen S. January 14, 2011 at 1:01 am

I am adding jogging into my daily walking routine slowly and loving it! Also, I am not much of a breakfast person, but I am bringing yogurt, and apple, or something else healthy to work each day for breakfast now so I don’t snack in the morning. Thanks!

156 R Norrod January 14, 2011 at 3:42 pm

This year I am concentrating on portion control by eating six small meals a day. In addition, I am drinking more water. I have lost 58lbs. and have 50 more to go.

193 Amanda January 20, 2011 at 12:39 pm

I’m trying to lose a bit of weight. I hate exercising so I started out with a really simple plan that takes five minutes of my day. So far it’s working! Oh and try some more veggies.

194 Erin January 20, 2011 at 1:20 pm

I’m going to try and walk around a small lake (3 miles around) every morning before work… if it’s not raining of course!

195 Susan (Oliepants) January 20, 2011 at 1:28 pm

I’m going to drink more water and increase snacks as opposed to eating only three big meals.

196 Karina January 20, 2011 at 6:20 pm

i’m planning on drinking much more water

197 Eileen January 20, 2011 at 8:43 pm

I know a better breakfast can make a better day for me…I usually ditch it all together or eat so late that it messes up my eating schedule and metabolism. To better help this, I need to eat MORE throughout the day, Healthy foods…starting with breakfast. I know the “starve” is not good and the whole DIET thing I am SO tired of. With kids in school I don’t worry about feeding myself “normal” anymore until dinner. I’d like to get to a point this year that I can be on track, eat like a normal woman again…where food is just FOOD and not an enemy, enjoy it and let be a tool to improve my rotten health. After that, I can work on getting my MOVE on again and stop being a couch slouch. Having chronic illness doesn’t mean you should stop working on yourself just because you have been “dealt” a rotten hand…it means you have to work harder and better at keeping healthy!
Hope I can put these better choices into ACTION!

thanks!

The changes I made for this year is to stay Positive and to eat more healthier.

203 abitnerdy January 21, 2011 at 2:50 pm

Some better choices I am going to make are:
1) Eating a HEALTHY breakfast. No excuses, no exceptions.
2) Getting outdoors more, taking walks around the neighborhood, it’s relaxing and good for you so why the heck not.
3) Get Organized. I’ve been a mess all my life. Not a sloppy mess just, I toss things about and push things around and then spend an entire weekend working myself out of the weeds. So i’m making an effort to get organize and STAY organized.
3) Get in touch with friends, not just a text or a call but lunch, or brunch or coffee or a full on fancy date! :)

Cheers!

The choices I’ve made are to work out everyday, cut carbs, eat healthier.

210 Amanda January 22, 2011 at 3:15 pm

211 alycep January 22, 2011 at 3:49 pm

I am making more educated food choices this year. I am resolved to eat mostly local and organic food. I think it is important to know where your food comes form and what is in it.

216 Debra F January 23, 2011 at 4:54 pm

After years of resolving to simply eat less to try to lose weight (and never being successful), this year I changed my resolution to add to my diet; specifically more fiber. I know I don’t get enough fiber in my diet, so I’m adding high fiber foods to each meal. It is much easier to keep this resolution, and I actually do feel better physically.

217 Julie Johnson January 23, 2011 at 9:56 pm

I plan to drink more water and get to the gym at least 3X a week.

218 Sterling January 24, 2011 at 11:57 am

For starters, I’m running my second half marathon on March 20th, so I started the new year off starting to eat right and more healthy again. I trained for my last half and did not pay attention to the foods I was eating. Now, I’m menu planning each week (and that bacon mac & cheese will have to be on my one off day!) to make sure I eat enough veggies and protein. Not a big fruit person. And besides that, just getting back into my workout routine each day to make sure I stay in shape!

219 Aisling January 24, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I’m changing the way we eat. Have been trying some new (to us) recipes that incorporate more vegetables and fruits and less red meat. So far, so good! mcgillrmcgill(at)charter(dot)net

220 Sandra Brower January 24, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I have lost 10 lbs so far. Added protein and nixed some of the simple carbs from my diet. Also, I added some heart and lung pumping cardio to increase my metabolism twice a day. I only added short bursts, between 10 and 15 minutes each. So far so good. I will keep on doing what works :)

I’ve started recording what I eat every day to pay closer attention to mindless snacking & poor health choices -it’s amazing what a difference being accountable for each bite makes. I’ve also set a fitness goal of getting back into my running routine and running a 1/2 marathon in the fall!

224 Katie January 26, 2011 at 9:25 am

My first resolution was to start a blog, which I did, so now I am on to my next goal! I am going to make an effort to incorporate fruit and veggies into every meal

So I am determined to stay on my special diet this year to be healthy, slim, and feel better, too. Only cheat at birthday parties or once in awhile. And dang, I looked pretty good in a dress yesterday and I am 55!

I’m going to live healthier this year – not fanatically healthier because I won’t stick to it, but I’m going to try to do a little more each day to be healthy.

I have been eating more veggies and smaller main course portions. Also have been exercising more which will get easier once the weather improves.

I’m making better choices by reading food labels, eliminating drive-thru meals *sob* and eliminating all sodas and sweetened beverages. I also make sure to add a fruit or veg to every meal. Just those small changes make a big difference.

I’m going to surround myself with positive people rather than negative ones.

Drinking the recommended amount of water per day is my goal…and it’s difficult, but worth doing, and I do feel the results.

I LOVE Jimmy Dean! YUM!! *slurps*
I’m trying so hard to lose this after-baby weight… shes 8 mo old and I’ve lost 15 lbs and I have 15 more to go! its a daily struggle to make healthy choices and be active. Hard to make enough time in the day, to take care of the baby and get my other little one to (and from) school, plus take care of myself, 2 dogs, the husband the house, but somehow I manage. (Moms do it everyday, but noone tells you how HARD it is! one was easy, two kids, totally diff! Lordy if I had more! ) Lord, grant me the serenity to not freak out over every little tiny mess. My resolution is to lose this weight!~
I am eating healthier and trying hard! .. Wish me luck!!! :)
